Hi Miguel,
Yes I agree with your comments on the Telecenter Europe. We have a lot to learn from them.
In Southern Africa we are picking up some learning expriences from the Network. Though I did not attend the Telecenter Europe Summit in Instanbul, I have picked a lot of points online.

We have also drawn up SATNET strategic plan that will be discussed during the Southern Africa Telecenter Network Forum to be held in Lusaka soon. We belive this will guide the development of the network.
We are also collaborating with a number of regional bodies that will help us building our capacity and momentum such as COMESA and SADC.

One key thing in our work is to motivate the creation of telecenter networks in each coutnry of targetted countries in southern Africa.
It is right that the telecenter movement particularly in southern Africa will help support the regional network to come out from the nascent stage.

Hello Members of the group.

I was recently part of the Telecentre Europe summit in Istanbul. A vibrant event where I experienced first hand the evolution of Telecentre networks throughout Europe. They are certainly moving in the right direction in terms of improving organization, collaboration and active exchange among members of the network.

In my opinion there are two important elements that are responsible for this positive momentum in Telecentre Europe Network:

1.- They are working hard to work as a regional network. Certainly there are personal as well as collective leaderships driving many of the positives activities taking place within Telecentre Europe. But most importantly they seem to be clear about the value of acting as one big body when the situation call for that. That along is a great achievement.

2.- Telecentre Europe is building a positive and productive relationship with many stakeholders, but particularly relevant is their relationship with private sector and government. They are reaching out and they are making a name for them selves in the process.

In my opinion this two situations are very much part of what we like to call Telecentre 2.0. -- Both should also be part of telecentre network' s DNA if they want to last and/or want to make a positive impact in their communities.

Active collaboration, exchange and engagement with multiples players and sectors is also part of the natural behavior of any successful Social Enterprise.

As for most of the Telecentre networks out there, there is a long way to go. But now we have so many positive examples of how to better do our work, and we have a vibrant community where we can all learn from each other, work together and collaborate more effectively .

When we get there, we the telecentre community will be one of the most effective networks of social entrepreneurs in the world. I believe that's all possible...do you?

Social Entrepreneurship can be a part of "Building Successful Telecentres." How? What other strategies are there?

I am Subir Dey, writing on behalf of 'i4d (information for development)' print magazine on ICT4D published by Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies (CSDMS), NOIDA, India. Many of you might be aware of this magazine through our sister publication, 'telecentre magazine'. But for the convenience of those who are not aware of the i4d magazine, below is a brief profile :

i4d is intended to provide a much-needed platform for exchange of information, ideas, opinions and experiences, both inside and outside the ICT4D sector. i4d encompasses the role and relevance of ICT in various development sectors such as Rural Development, Gender, Governance, Micro-finance, Education, Health, Wireless Communication, ICT For Poor, Local Content, Culture and Heritage, and more.

The May 2009 issue of i4d magazine is woven with the theme of 'Social Entrepreneurship and ICTs'.

We would like to invite community members to share with us their experiences in this nascent sector in the form of case studies and articles

We encourage a wide variety of submissions on the topic areas outlined below:

Vision and objective
Ofok is dedicated to bring IT literacy to as many people as possible. We are therefore offering basic IT courses from well-known companies such as Cisco Systems and Sun Microsystems completely free. That’s right! Students will be taught by an instructor for free, and gain access to the online curriculum for free. Additionally, there will be a discount for exams… And anyone can partake in this endeavor!

How it works
Universities and high schools who wish to partake in this initiative can do so in alliance with the Digital Academy. An Ofok ambassador will head a group of Ofok volunteers – known as a chapter – in each university or high-school. In the high school, the chapter will select a group of students from each year group who will then teach the basics of IT to all the students in their year.

Within the university campus, the chapter will ideally consist of students from the
Faculty of Engineering who have a passion for IT. Within the university, the chapter will select a faculty team leader from each faculty. The faculty team leader will then recruit local faculty members who will act as mentors teaching the basics of IT to all members of his or her faculty.

Ofok will first begin its contribution to ICT for All by offering IT Essentials: PC
Hardware and Software through the Cisco Networking Academy Program and Free Open
Source Softwaren Essentials through the Sun Academic Initiative. All
certificates will be internationally recognized and issued directly from Cisco and Sun.
However it doesn’t stop here – there’s a reward! The chapter to have trained the largest number of people will be awarded free advanced ICT and business courses in Digital Academy. This will be the reward for those who strived hardest in our noble goal to reduce IT literacy in Egypt!

Goal
Knowing the basics of IT is the first and an essential step for any kind of development. Think about it… Information sharing on a wide variety of issues such as famine, disease, health treatments, educational and literacy programs has completely revolutionized our lives. The internet has made life better for everyone – and with technology becoming more advanced and more widespread, the potential for online learning, improved communications and setting up e-businesses will continue to grow. Of course, for all this to happen, it has to start somewhere. Learning computer fundamentals is only just the start, and we at Ofok feel very proud to participate in this endeavor!

15 Ofok ambassadors have been selected for this project to promote ICT among young people with the mission to inspire others of their own age to gain ICT training. It encourages the development of young people through giving them the opportunity to fulfill their potential by developing their interpersonal and IT skills.

Road map into the future
As Ofok, our intention is to increase the level of education in Egypt. We plan to provide advanced technology courses by working in close alliance with students and young people by forming community groups. The final aim being… To empower the youth!
