GENDER AND TELECENTRE

Modern technologies of ICT and telecentres are very helpful for both men and women. But it may be more useful to learn the actual status of efficacy for the development of societies through the telecentre related technologies.

GENDER AND TELECENTRE

The question of gender is a vital issue for all developmental issues.Considering this,
I felt the necessity of creating a group under the title GENDER AND TELECENTRE to honour and inspire particularly the women who
are working side by side with their male counterparts in the ICT and telecentre sectors. Unless the roles and particiapation of gender are not recognized and appreciated the holistic development may never be achieved.Besides, a sense of trust will be developed among the women when their roles will be recognized with respect and in turn this will help promote our telecentre.org.

The objectives which I contemplated for this purpose are placed for the benign consideration of the learned members of telecentre.org and all concerned persons.
The objectives are:
1.To study or review the gender based telecentre activities globally and locally from various
sources and publish them for the knowledge of the members and development of telecentres.
2.Identify the gender based problems that hinder the progress of telecentres and take
appropriate measures to overcome the problems.
3.To inspire the women for greater participation in the telecentre activities.
4.To identify the women scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs, organizers and leaders for
their outstanding contributions for the development of telecentres and honour them as
FEATURED PERSONS IN TELECENTRE INITIATIVES.

I take the opportunity to invite all learned members and interested persons to kindly provide comments and feedbacks to help develop an effective group comprising the gender in the light of telecentres.

Jan,

I would like to do research on a comparison of achievement levels based on gender. From working with females in the past, I feel that the data will show that females are eager learners who benefit from online education.

Hi, this study confirms that females are eager learners and greatly benefit from the use of ICT in distance education.

I wonder if your experience shows girls excelling when given the opportunity to have equitable access to ICT's?

Research shows that in many urban-rural global communities, females fail to complete at least a middle school education. Most girls are under-served, a factor that often influences the cycles of poverty affecting many communities.

In some of my recent grant writings, I have focused on under-served females. I have written several grants requesting funding for scholarships for secondary female students to take Personal Learning Center International (PLC/i) online, low cost, quality high school courses. The Web site is http://www.plc.edu. At this point, funding has not yet been awarded.

PLC/i creates safe e-communities in which girls are equal, as are all students. Females, as well as all students, learn how to build commuty, how to agree to disagree, how to think critically, how to problem solve, and how to engage in real world application projects in the 21st Century.

Perhaps if some of the females in your community can take PLC/i online courses, they will apply the principles learned in the online e-community to build better Telecentre communities. As Liaison to the UN for PLC/i, I am willling to create a Web site for girls from all global communities who are enrolled in PLC/i courses to join a special discussion forum. Using formative assessments, surveys, and examination of discussions, I will disaggregate the data and post it in this forum to help Telecentres best facilitate the needs of females.

To find the key for successful Telecentre operations for females, females must have an opportunity to engage in critical thinking skills, to problem solve in a secure environment that builds a sense of community, and to voice their opinions in a manner that promotes equality.

Hi all, thank you for the interesting dicsussion.
here in South Africa, my organisation has launched a campaign to reach young people about safe spaces using mobile social networks. It's called "Keep your Chats Exactly That". We launched this campaign because your women in our girls project were telling us that they were being harassed and felt uncomfortable in online/mobile spaces.

Our girls use our training facility computers for access, as do female community members (we don't really have a traditional tele-centre) . Our centre is only open to men once a week because we did find that the centre was used predominantly by men and women stopped coming. I have heard form tele-centre managers that having a 'women and girls' only access day improved their numbers of women and girls using the tele-centre - I wonder if other people know if this has had the same affect elsewhere?

I really appreciate launching of the group. I think we have to invite mainstream gender advocates into the group.

We may launch a campaign to integrate gendr-basaed approach in developing, desigin, implementing, and evaluating any ICT4D project.
Gender Evaluation Methodology (GEM) can be a very good tool for this. Please go to the link to know more about GEM:http://www.apcwomen.org/gem/?q=frontpage

The comments given by Claire and Chandita seem very much relevant for the proper functioning of the telecentres.Especially Claire refers to the real problems faced by the women engaged in telecentres.I appreciate her points and concerns. The deliberation may generate some valuable suggestions which will help the women to overcome the gender based problems being faced in the the telecentres.
Chandita Mukherjee Comment by Chandita Mukherjee on June 3, 2009 at 1:06am
Dear Claire
Thanks for your comments!
You have rightly pointed out the dual pulls in the lives of women and how the family is very important for the stability of an individual. The good thing about digital technologies is that they allow us to work at any time and the work can be taken to the home. This makes combining work and home duties more manageable for women compared to traditional office, factory or farm-based work.
Other comments, folks?
Chandita
