The report of the latest South African national survey on HIV has been published and the results are quite encouraging. The results show a decline in HIV infection rates among teenagers and an increase in condom use. The report also mentions the importance of Voluntary Couselling & Testing for HIV, particularly if it is done outside of "healthcare" facilities. This supports the approach that we are using at Nike where we partner with Right to Care (A VCT service provider) to take testing to sporting facilities. This encourages people to take their HIV tests as there is no link to "unwellness" and the testing is seen as part of the fun activities. I would love to hear your thoughts on this!

I thought I'd share this with you. Some time ago I mentioned an organisation called Positive Heroes. They had entered the Nike Gamechangers Competition and are now one of the three finalists. One of the ways to fight AIDs/HIV is to educate them in schools using ICT in education contents.

There is not one solution to this mega problem. AIDs/HIV would be part of our lives and the only way to minimise it is through education. We start that in schools and from there children will spread the words to their parents.

This way is more practical and subtle than trying to educate the adults directly... which of course should still go on.

Hello Dean, your are indeed right when you say that telecentres can play a role by creating more awareness using ICTs in their local communities. In Uganda, a call centre was established to do this. It is a free hot line where patients, people etc can call for guidance about HIV/Aids.

This has gained so much popularity as patients can be counseled from their homes. Also in case of anything, any community can call for more information about the epidermic.

Hi,
I think one the main tareas of concern is how we can increase the use of telcenters to create HIV/Aids awareness in local communities. I believe that telecenters can be used as centers of excellence in the reduction of HIV/Aids.
There may be good expriences in some regions we can learn from. What are the good cases in case of Uganda or elsewhere in the use of ICT tools in telecenters contributiing to the reduction of HIV/Aids in rural and urban regions?
How information can reach the groups of people through the use of iCTs.

am currently involved in a project called ASK (Answers solutions and Knowledge about HIV/AIDS) its an initiative of AIESEC KIU in Kampala Uganda we are trying to create awearness and we are targeting the youth and school kids. We loose colleagues, friends, relatives and many more in different tregedies and we move so fast to counter the causes of the deaths. But then we forget to bear in mind that each second, minute, hour or day that passes, HIV claims a life if not lives. We are at risk but with such discussions like this one, we have hope for tomorrow. It is slowly diminishing humanity. As for now, the solution lies in standing and voicing it out, which includes; Confessing, Accepting, Abstaining, moving on couragiously among other measures. Therefore, this, my friends, is an apportunity for us to talk about this menace and help find a way out. Sandra, Jackie, and others this discussion is real and appropriate.
I must congratulate the Inter-University Council of East Africa in conjunction with AMREF for the bold step they have taken to counter the menace. Briefly, they are out to determine the zero prevalence of University students, behaviour change, policies and programmes on HIV AIDS. As we are talking they are in some the selected Universities running baseline surveys, which involves VCTs. The end results will be used to draw the way forward for the Universities which will entail policies and programmes. The same can be done to schools, institutes/ colleges, communities and the likes since it is only through such forums that people can stand to be encouraged to know their status be counselled and be helped to live on.
