S Gavashkar President's far-sightedness created Nenasalas instead of internet-cafes: Tissa Vitharana

At a time when world funding bodies proposed the setting of internet-cafés in cities of Sri Lanka in a manner that would cater only to the rich elite President Mahinda Rajapaksa decided that Nenasalas or Wisdom Outlets should be set up instead island-wide to cater to the poor rural folk. The Minister made this statement while participating in the first National Nenasala Convention held at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort in Colombo recently. Although today the world's economy has deteriora… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee TALKING TO THE EXPERTS ― updates from Mumbai

Hello again! You’ve got to admit― if you happen to like technology and soc-tech issues, then working for a project like this one has its perks, because you get to meet with people that you wouldn’t ordinarily come across. Where else would you find the chance to get an overview on the telecentre sector in India? Where else would you get the telecentre professionals, the government and the legal experts in one huge sweep? Now, for us as researchers, the main side-attraction in this project was a… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee WHO COULD HOLD THE OPERATOR'S HAND? ― updates from Mumbai

Guess how many telecentre operators that we met knew about botnets and spyware? Three out of ten. And guess how many operators knew about Creative Commons and Free/Open Source Software? Zero. Guess how met knew about and used Mozilla Firefox web browser because it's fast, stable and secure? 6 out of 10. Who gives information to the telecentre operator? In most cases, the IT engineer who maintains their hardware and software or the salesman who sold it to them. In short, telecentre operators d… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee HELPING THE CUSTOMER ― updates from Mum

At the start: we swear we did not make this up. We really saw it. If you don't believe us, go to the small town of Palghar, Thane district in Maharashtra and see for yourself. We visited two out of its four telecentres and saw something really interesting there. One telecentre was a large setup with 10 machines, the other had five. The larger one, was totally full and two customers were even awaiting their turn outside the place. The smaller one, about 500 metres away, was as empty as a discard… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee WOMEN OPERATORS AND WOMEN CUSTOMERS ― updates from Mumbai

Many of the telecentres we visited while researching for the manual (8 out 10 in fact, in urban and small town settings both) had more men as customers than women. This is something we've all seen. Stands to reason, doesn't it, that women will prefer to buy services or products from women providers? Sure. But mostly it's woman-specific products and services that you think of in this paradigm. We're no business gurus, but we thought so too. Then one interesting incident set us thinking about app… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee INTERNET REACH AND SOCIAL NETWORKING ― updates from Mumbai

As we wrote before, we conducted a mini-survey in and out of Mumbai to get ideas for our tracks. As part of the survey, we spoke to the users of cyber cafes as telecentres are popularly known in our area, as well as to the operators. Just as we started this work, we hit upon an interesting lead that might be the indicator of a rising trend. It is this: social networking is responsible for creating many new Internet users, especially in smaller towns. We in the cities always knew and took the O… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee WHAT, MANUALS? OH NO! ― updates from Mumbai

As we wrote in the previous post, the telecentre operators were very helpful and encouraging about the idea of a manual of best practices for their profession. Many of them were fully awake to their paucity of knowledge and wanted to overcome it. But, there's a big BUT here. The impression we got was that the telecentre operators considered themselves to be people of action who wanted no truck with theory or texts. It was strange. Though they would say 'A manual is a good idea', they typically… Continue

Chandita Mukherjee Plugging the gaps - updates from Mumbai on the manual for telecentre operators

Greetings to everyone at the telecentre.org Academy thread! Fellow curriculum developers, we're writing in at almost the end of our assignment “Practices for safe telecentre operations: rights and responsibilities” This blog is to communicate our research experiences and anecdotes to the others working on the Curriculum Commons project of telecentre.org. Considering the time-frame we had, it's been a Q-hnDOS sort of assignment for us, to put it in coding terms: a Quick but hopefully not Dirty Op… Continue

telecentre.org Telecentres work in Colombia reaches the streets

Two children pose for pictures with telecentre practitioners in a poor neighborhood in Medellín, Colombia. They laugh and make conversation with the visitors. After the pictures are taken they ask “Could you give us the address of the website where you will upload the pictures?” Silvia Caicedo, telecentre.org's Program Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean, explained that this anecdote shows how ICTs are now a part of Colombian society, even in the poorest districts of Medellín. This is, i… Continue
